That is where the F A A risk mitigation process comes in, and the acronym T E A M describes the steps in the mitigation process. T E A M represents transfer, eliminate, accept, and mitigate.

Okay, so T E A M. Walk me through how a pilot actually applies those four steps in the cockpit without just kidding themselves.

Well, take that broken landing light or bad weather. You can eliminate the risk by canceling the flight. You can transfer the risk by, say, buying a commercial airline ticket or hiring an instrument rated charter pilot to fly you instead. You can mitigate the risk by delaying departure until sunrise when the light is fine.

What you cannot do is tape a hardware store flashlight to your headset and call it mitigation!

Precisely. That is dangerous cockpit improvisation, not risk mitigation. And crucially, under F A A guidelines, pilots must never accept serious or high risks without prior mitigation. Accept is only for residual, low level risk after you have brought the hazard down to a safe standard.

So for a low time student pilot, T E A M is really a survival filter. It stops you from rationalizing bad choices. Eliminating the flight or transferring the travel risk to an airline is not quitting, it is actually the ultimate sign of mature aeronautical decision making.
