Chapter 1
The Narrow Runway Trap and Aspect Ratio Tricks
Claire Brooks
So Jimmy is on short final, right, coming in to land on this tiny thirty foot wide strip, and his brain is, is, it is screaming at him that he is way too high. So what does he do? He shoves the yoke forward, noses down, and almost clips the top of the pine trees before Captain Bob reaches over and grabs the controls.
Oliver Hart
Thirty feet! That is ridiculously narrow for a runway, Claire. A standard commercial runway is what, like, one hundred feet wide?
Claire Brooks
Exactly, one hundred feet is the baseline your brain gets wired to expect. And this is the optical mechanism the Federal Aviation Administration warns about. It is all about aspect ratio. Your brain sees that thirty foot strip and because it is so narrow, the geometry looks identical to a standard one hundred foot runway when you are at a much higher altitude.
Oliver Hart
Ah, so you are actually at three hundred feet above ground level, but visual perspective tells you you are at six hundred feet! That triggers this fatal urge to duck under the glidepath to try and fix what looks like a steep approach.
Claire Brooks
Yes! You duck under, thinking you are rejoining the normal angle, but you are actually flattening out way too low, heading straight for those pine trees Jimmy almost hit.
Oliver Hart
And I, I imagine the reverse is just as dangerous if you fly into a big international airport with a wide runway? Say, two hundred feet across?
Claire Brooks
Oh, totally. On a wide runway, the illusion tricks you into feeling dangerously low when you are actually right on glidepath. So pilots pull back, they pitch up to compensate, and then they end up flaring high, losing airspeed, and slamming down in a sudden stall right onto the tarmac.
Oliver Hart
So on a narrow strip you smash into the trees, and on a wide strip you stall thirty feet in the air and drop like a stone. That is... that is terrifying. How do you actually fight your own eyes in the cockpit then?
Claire Brooks
You have to stop trusting subjective geometry. Pilots learn cross checking, literally constantly verifying their altimeter against their distance to the runway threshold. And you rely on visual glide slope indicators, like visual approach slope indicator lights, VASI, or precision approach path indicator lights, PAPI.
Oliver Hart
Right, the red and white lights beside the runway. Red over white, you are alright. White over white, you are high in the sky. The physical lights do not care about aspect ratio illusions.
Chapter 2
Black Hole Approaches and Sloping Runways

They really do not. But, um, things get even crazier when you take away the surrounding landscape entirely. Have you ever heard of a black hole approach?
Oliver Hart
I have heard the phrase, yes. That happens when you are landing at night over dark water or unlit forest, right?
Claire Brooks
Right! When landing at night from over water or non lighted terrain, the runway lights are the only source of light. You have zero peripheral visual cues, no horizon, no ground texture, nothing. The airport just looks like it is floating in empty space.
Oliver Hart
So without that peripheral context, your spatial orientation just completely breaks down. What path do pilots end up flying into a black hole landing?
Claire Brooks
They almost always fly a curved, dangerously low glidepath. Because the isolated lights make the runway feel higher or closer than it actually is, pilots constantly think they are overshooting. So they pull power, sink lower and lower, and can end up flying straight into water or terrain miles short of the pavement.
Oliver Hart
Good heavens. And then throw terrain elevation changes into the mix, like a sloping runway, and it gets even worse. An up sloping runway tilts away from you as you approach, which makes you feel like you are flying too high.
Claire Brooks
Yep! An up sloping runway creates the false impression that you are climbing above glidepath, so you pitch down and descend way too low. And down sloping runways do the exact opposite. A down sloping runway drops away from you, making you feel low, so you fly a dangerously high approach and risk overshooting the entire field.
Oliver Hart
It really highlights how useless human intuition can be up there. I remember reading about Captain Bob's fifteen thousand hour rule for flying into unfamiliar fields at night.
Claire Brooks
Oh, Bob's rule is absolute gold. What was his exact take on it?
Oliver Hart
He said you keep your eyes locked on your instrument profile and vertical speed. The second your visual cues contradict what your instruments are telling you, you do not try to guess or play hero. You execute an immediate go around, climb back up, and reset.
Claire Brooks
Trust the gauges, not your eyeballs. That rule saves lives every single day.
