Chapter 1

The Anatomy of Cockpit Amnesia

So Claire, I, I was looking at this flight instructor report, and it is a, a absolute goldmine of human error. This student pilot, Jimmy, is flying a Cessna one seventy two, okay? And his instructor, Bob, pulls the throttle back to simulate an engine failure. A classic maneuver. And Jimmy just freezes. He cannot recall the best glide speed. Now, here is the kicker. The speed, which is sixty five knots, was literally written on his hand, on his kneeboard, and, and even on his water bottle. And he still couldn't recall it.

Okay, sixty five knots. It is literally written on his body, and his brain just locks him out. That is, uh, I mean, that is the ultimate test anxiety, right? It is not that he is thick, as Bob might think, but it is, it is what the FAA calls retrieval failure. It is that classic tip of the tongue phenomenon, but, you know, with the added bonus of a simulated screaming descent toward a field.

Exactly. Retrieval failure. The information is, is theoretically in the long term memory, but the retrieval path is completely blocked by cognitive overload. The brain, when it is flooded with cortisol, just, it just pulls the plug on nonessential directories. But, but then we get to the decay dilemma. After just a two week break from flying, Jimmy goes up again and completely forgets how to execute a proper short field landing. Two weeks!

Wait, wait, a two week gap? That is, that is nothing. I mean, I go two weeks without using my parallel parking skills and I don't suddenly smash into the curb. But Bob is calling this the theory of fading, right? The idea that neural connections just, well, they decay if you don't use them. But Jimmy had this hilarious defense. He, he told Bob that his brain operates like a self cleaning cache. Like, it is actively deleting boring files to save space for radio frequencies.

A self cleaning cache. It is a brilliant excuse, really. But, uh, unfortunately for Jimmy, the nervous system does not quite work like a solid state drive. If you do not reinforce those pathways, the physical trace, the, the, the engram in the brain, it just fades. And, and this leads to my absolute favorite part of the report. The desktop clash. Jimmy decided to cope with this fading by turning the cockpit into a, a physical pinboard. Sticky notes. Sticky notes everywhere. All over the instrument panel. Checklist steps, frequencies, reminders.

Oh my god, can you imagine? You are trying to scan your airspeed indicator, and you have to peel back a yellow post it note that says buy milk, or, or, you know, remember to flare. Bob apparently just ripped them all down mid flight. And honestly, I am with Bob on this one. You cannot paper over a lack of deep mental encoding with physical clutter. The FAA is really clear on this. True recall under stress relies on building structured cognitive schemas, not, you know, turning your altimeter into a refrigerator door.

No, you are quite right. Piling on physical reminders is a, a plaster on a bullet wound. It does not solve the underlying issue of encoding. If you have not integrated the information into a meaningful structure, when the stress hits, the sticky notes just become visual noise. They do not help you decode the situation. They just, well, they just get in the way of the actual instruments.

Chapter 2

Interference and the Flight of the Traumatized Brain

Well, and the cognitive load gets even messier when you look at how Jimmy's brain is processing his other daily habits. So, they are flying, right, and Jimmy goes to make a radio call. Instead of saying he is entering the downwind leg for Runway twenty seven, he blares over the airwaves that he is merging left in five hundred feet. He literally gave highway driving directions to air traffic control.

Merging left. I, I love that. It is the perfect example of interference theory. You have these over learned, highly practiced habits, like driving a car, which you have done for years, clashing with newly acquired, much weaker aviation concepts. Proactive interference. The old memory is actively attacking the new one because the new one is not properly anchored yet.

Right, and because he hasn't fully mastered the aviation terminology, his brain defaults to the path of least resistance under stress, which is driving a Honda Civic. But, okay, let's talk about the darker side of memory here. Jimmy apparently had absolutely zero recollection of a near disastrous crosswind landing they did the day before. Like, they almost hit the runway lights, Bob is screaming, grabbing the yoke, and the next day Jimmy is just like, what landing? I don't remember that. That is wild to me.

Well, Bob's diagnosis here is fascinating. He calls it a mix of repression and suppression. Repression being that unconscious defense mechanism, right? The mind literally burying the trauma of almost wrecking a ninety thousand dollar aircraft. But then there is suppression, where Jimmy is consciously deciding to push away the memory of Bob screaming at him. He is actively refusing to think about it because it is, well, it is deeply embarrassing.

But is that actually healthy for a pilot? I mean, sure, it protects his ego, but if you repress the memory of almost crashing, how do you learn from the mistake? You are basically setting yourself up to repeat the exact same error because you deleted the error log.

You are absolutely right. It is a terrible coping strategy for safety. This is why Bob is pushing so hard for what he calls meaningful association and multisensory learning. He wants Jimmy to associate the physical sensations, the sound of the wind, the feel of the rudder, with actual aerodynamic concepts. You have to build those rich, multi layered neural connections so they can survive the panic.

Yeah, though Jimmy's argument is basically that some memories are objectively better off forgotten. He wants a clean slate. But I don't know, it feels like a tense standoff. Is his next checkride going to be a triumph of actual structured retention, or is it just going to be another exercise in sheer, trauma induced amnesia? I guess we will see if those sticky notes make a comeback.
