Chapter 1

Analysis Paralysis at Four Thousand Feet

Claire Brooks

So picture this. You are cruising at four thousand feet over Pennsylvania in a Cessna 172, and you notice the engine oil temperature needle creeping up toward 230 degrees Fahrenheit. What is your very first instinct?

Oliver Hart

Well, look for a safe spot to land, I would hope, or check the oil pressure.

Right. You would think so. But a student pilot named Jimmy did something completely different. He pulled out his aviation instructor flashcards and tried to mentally recite the Federal Aviation Administration six step DECIDE model while his airplane steadily drifted down three hundred feet.

Well, the first step is Detect, where the decision maker detects the fact that change has occurred. Simple enough, right? You see a needle move. And step two is Estimate, where you evaluate the urgency of that change.

Right, step one, you see the needle at 230 degrees. Step two, you realize 230 degrees is getting dangerously hot.

Except Jimmy spent four full minutes in step two, debating with himself whether a 15 degree temperature spike was, quote, statistically significant, all while the oil pressure needle was actively dropping down toward the yellow arc.

Four minutes! In an airplane, four minutes is an eternity. While he is doing mental statistics, his oil pressure is collapsing.

Exactly. And then it gets worse when he moves to steps three and four, Choose and Identify. Choose means deciding on a desired safe outcome, and Identify means listing all your possible solutions.

Okay, so Choose should be landing safely, and Identify should be looking at the nearest suitable runways.

Jimmy completely overcomplicated it. He pulled out his flight computer and started calculating exact fuel burns for five different airports that were 40 miles away!

Forty miles away? Please tell me there was somewhere closer.

Butler County Airport was sitting right there, five miles off his left wing, with a 3,500 foot paved runway. And Jimmy completely ignored it because he was bogged down doing math for airports an hour away.

Chapter 2

The Continuous Loop and Aviate First

Oliver Hart

That is extraordinary. He is staring at a flight computer calculating fuel burn for a distant field while a 3,500 foot strip is practically beneath his nose. What about the final two steps of the acronym?

Steps five and six are Do and Evaluate. Do is taking the actual physical action, like turning toward the runway, and Evaluate is monitoring the results to see if your solution is working.

Oliver Hart

Right, but if you treat those six steps like a static, linear checklist that you complete once and check off, you are missing the whole point, aren't you?

Claire Brooks

Spot on. Captain Bob calls that the closed loop fallacy. Student pilots think once you hit step six, you are done. But DECIDE is an infinite continuous loop. If you turn toward Butler County and the engine starts knocking or the weather drops, you immediately loop back to step one, Detect, and start the process over again with the new reality.

So it is a dynamic cycle, not a static test. But here is my question, Claire. If your engine suddenly quits entirely, do you really have time to run a six step committee meeting in your head?

Claire Brooks

Ah, see, that is the critical operational boundary Captain Bob had to teach Jimmy. DECIDE is built for evolving trends, things like creeping oil temperatures, a subtle fuel imbalance, or lowering cloud ceilings down the route. It is for slow burn problems.

Oliver Hart

And for immediate catastrophic failures?

That is naturalistic decision making. Memory items! If the engine cuts outright at four thousand feet, you do not recite D E C I D E. You immediately push the yoke forward and pitch for 68 knots best glide speed. Instant muscle memory.

Oliver Hart

Right! You do not deliberate, you fly. Which brings us to what Jimmy was actually doing with his hands while all this high altitude philosophy was happening.

Oh, it was a mess. While Jimmy was scribbling DECIDE steps on his leg kneeboard, trying to spell out the acronym, he drifted 30 degrees off his assigned compass heading and lost three hundred feet of altitude without even noticing.

He was so busy managing the decision making model that he forgot he was driving a flying piece of metal!

Captain Bob literally had to say, I have the flight controls, take back the yoke, and enforce the golden rule of flying.

Aviate, navigate, communicate. Always in that order. Keep the wings level and fly the airplane first, navigate to a safe spot second, and talk about it or spell out acronyms third.

I love that. Acronyms are tools to help you think under pressure, but if you prioritize the acronym over keeping the nose level, you are missing the forest for the trees.

Claire Brooks

Exactly. Detect the change, keep control of the plane, and look out the window at the 3,500 foot runway five miles away instead of doing calculus on a flashcard.

Oliver Hart

Good rule for aviation, and probably for life too. Fly the plane first.
